This is where it gets tricky, I think. The stuff that drives business growth isn’t always the most fun. In fact, it’s usually not fun or the stuff we prefer to do. That’s why change is hard because it’s about being disciplined enough each day to say no to what sounds momentarily exciting to focus on what matters.
But we can choose to hold ourselves accountable and to do things differently.
You’ve established your top three priorities. Now give yourself 20 coins and start thinking about the allocation. Dropping coins into buckets to represent the resources each will get.
Recruitment gets 5 coins.
Building a new marketing stack gets 10.
Content gets 4.
New creative gets 6.
Now we can visualize:
- How well our coin allocation reflects our priorities
- If we have too many coins in one bucket or not enough
- If we have too many buckets and what that means to the attention each will earn
- The coin tax of managing multiple buckets
We also see how specific actions are aligned across the organization, like LEGOs building upon each other. If workforce development is a key area this quarter, how do your different buckets work together to support that? If getting a new content initiative off the ground is where your focus lies, what buckets do you need to ensure success?
These are the choices that direct our attention and, in return, our business. They can be hard to make, but it's our job to make them.
I can feel the struggle when my kid has to pass up a property he wants because he knows he has to save his coins. Drawing that line in the sand or saying “no” to something feels not fun.
But I kinda like it.
Saying no is exciting because it’s you fully committing to the "stuff" you've already said YES to. The factors that will build your business and a potentially bigger reward. When you focus on buying up half the board, you can't lose. The coins are in your favor.
What can you say no to next week to give the stuff that matters more space?
